It is estimated that 10 percent of the population in the northern states as Maine, Minnesota, Wisconsin and experience ED, with less than 2 percent of those living in southern states such as Florida and New Mexico are suffering from this disorder. There are some simple but effective treatments for SAD. The main advantage seems to be light therapy, the patient is exposed to light that simulates sunlight. After being exposed to this light every day, 80 percent of patients experience relief from their symptoms within four days. Other forms of treatment for SAD is the change in diet (consumption of foods rich in complex carbohydrates), increased exercise, stress, techniques, sleep restriction (limiting the number of hours of sleep over a period of 24 hours), psychotherapy and antidepressants.
