What Are The Main Symptoms Of Depression ?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Image taken on by .
Let’s face it. There is still a stigma attached to mental illness and depression is no exception. There is little understanding of the disorder in general although depression symptoms are well documented. But medically speaking, we are light years way from effective, safe treatment. Up to now the only conventional medication has been tricyclics and SSRIs which have all been associated with some nasty side effects and the most alarming fact of all is that nobody knows exactly how these medications work on our brains.

Before we consider alternatives, let us look at the main symptoms of depression. Manic depression is sometimes referred to as bipolar and the latter name reflects the two extremes of symptoms from euphoric (manic) to deep depression. These changes can be very sudden and disconcerting for those around the individual. The sufferer may be on a high for quite long periods and display great energy but also irritability, aggressive and violent behavior.

The main symptoms of depression from the mild to the moderate will be less dramatic but still worrying for those who are close to the depressed person. Depression is a state of deep melancholy and gradually the sufferer gets sucked into a deep black hole where gloom, pessimism and a sense of hopelessness, bleakness and helplessness become so persistent and pervasive that daily activities are affected and the person just cannot function. These feelings often lead to suicide because that is the only action or way out for the depressed person.

There is a notable loss of self esteem and there is no longer any pleasure in doing the things he or she always loved doing. There is a lack of energy , lethargy takes over and depressed people tend to sleep for much longer although lack of sleep or insomnia can also be present. Individuals will vary. There is a distinct lack of interest in the people and the world around them, indecision and eating disorders. When there is talk of ending it all and a lot of talk about death, this is another one of the main symptoms of depression.

The fact that more people are now suffering from depression symptoms but there is a lower percentage of people actively seeking help and treatment may be due to the FDA back box warnings on the medicines about suicides. This may well have put people off seeking medication but no medication is worse than some medication.

Medications may cause side effects which in turn may lead to even more depressed thoughts which seems a rather sadistic way of treating an illness in my view. I know that herbal depression treatment can restore balance and serenity to the troubled mind while improving mood and really alleviate the main symptoms of depression with very few or minor side effects. Why not find out more about this alternative?

Estrogen patch Rx of depression & Mini-Gastric Bypass

Friday, February 5th, 2010

{question}

Efficacy of estradiol topical patch in the treatment of symptoms of depression following mini-gastric bypass. Rutledge R, Dorghazi P, Peralgie C. The Centers for Excellence in Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery, Henderson, NV, USA. drr@clos.net BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with elevated levels of estrogen. Gastric bypass causes rapid weight loss and decreased levels of estrogen. Patients after gastric bypass can suffer from anxiety and depression out of proportion to the surgical outcome. This study reports the efficacy of a short-term empiric trial of topical estradiol for the treatment of mild to moderate depression and anxiety following mini-gastric bypass (MGB) in women. METHODS: Postoperative MGB women were surveyed for the presence of depressive symptoms before and after MGB. The results of an empiric trial of transdermal patches of estradiol-17beta were assessed. Outcome measures were the self-reported efficacy of the patch. RESULTS: 711 women who had undergone MGB and had functioning e-mail addresses made up the study. 62% of patients reported depression prior to surgery. 156 patients (22%) reported depression after the operation. Patients treated with estradiol sustained antidepressant benefit. Depression is common in obese patients and remains a problem in a subset following the MGB operation. Transdermal estradiol replacement appears to be an effective treatment of symptoms of depression in women following MGB.

What are the Major Symptoms of Depression?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Image taken on by .
In recent years, depression has received much attention from the medical and pharmaceutical industries. They have not only made a lot of research into the causes of depression, but also large development costs large investments by pharmaceutical companies for production of effective drugs to combat this disease. Depression is no longer a disease that affects people who pass through the traumatic experience, in which the symptoms are easy to spot. But many people suffer from this disease in silence, while the fight for a glimmer of hope of survival. Through this article I will share with you some symptoms of depression. We should no longer be ignorant about this disease that affects the lives of many individuals and their families, with the precious lives of many others who could not escape death from the disease. Depressed people constantly flooded with thoughts of suicide. Depressed individuals are always thinking about dying. They believe that life is no longer useful and bring an end to their lives, you can specify the realm of eternal bliss. It often begins with a problem or a tragedy before it’s painful to go through. This pain will lead to thoughts of depression, manifested in the form of talking to yourself. It is when people talk about depressed statements as: “Nobody cares about me”, “Life is too hard for a living,” “Life is meaningless,” “I want to end my life” “I can not live a day this, “I want to die” and so on. If the flow of suicidal thoughts continued some start planning his own death in detail how the method of death, time and place of death. Some will even leave messages for their family and friends. Depressed individuals have continued to press and feel sad. We all go through a full range of emotions in different seasons in life, from boredom to excitement, from joy to sorrow, and from pleasure to pain. Depressed individuals, on the other hand, is constantly overwhelmed by feelings of sadness. Even when the pleasant surprises and gifts presented to them, they feel a little happiness to all. Because human emotions play an important role in our daily lives, can the negative feelings of depression can cause serious health problems among depressed persons. Some diseases are commonly known are: headaches, heart problems, stomach pain, body aches, insomnia, and anemia. Depressed individuals are constantly back from others. Individuals who suffer from depression do not want to burden others with his disease. It will avoid meetings or events that enable them to meet people they know. This is because depressed people think that nobody cares and understands their pain is the withdrawal of the very best way to protect themselves from prejudice and provided it can be turned against them. In critical situations where depressed people plan for their death, some understand others pain may continue to meet their death. Sometimes you will also create a sense of guilt. To reduce debt, we are trying to avoid people who love and thereby simplifies the process of dying. If you know someone who manifests the symptoms listed above, do not be silent. You may be the only person who can help the depressed person. There are many forms of depression treatment available today. Many of those who received treatment are now living a normal life and healthy and full of hope again. But there are many others out there who are still drowning in the sea extend from depression, swim alone aimlessly with less hope and love for life, echoing to the sound of death. If left empty words, their precious lives taken away by the wild waves of depression. You can be a savior of life to those you know who suffer from depression.

Although it is primarily designed as a mental state may also charge different amounts of pain and discomfort, which manifest as physical symptoms of depression. One of the problems associated with the physical symptoms of depression is the misdiagnosis of mental illness in itself. Doctors, when presented with these physical symptoms, and will test for the diagnosis of a disease and prescribe physical therapy to treat these symptoms without knowing or understanding that the symptoms are hiding an insidious disease. When viewing a listing of these physical symptoms can understand why these misdiagnoses and mistreatment can occur. 1. Headache – this is one of the first symptoms that can occur with depression. Headache may actually be intensified for migraine, such as those with the intensity of it. 2nd Chest pain – Depression can cause chest pain, which for most people is a sign of an impending heart attack. Although each chest pain should be checked by a doctor may also be a symptom of a depressed person. 3rd Sleep disorders – People suffering from depression or may have trouble falling asleep (insomnia) or sleep for too long. Your may have trouble getting out of bed too. 4th Questions related to Gastrointestinal – diarrhea, constipation and nausea are all symptoms of depression. 5th Extreme fatigue – Most people who suffer from depression also suffer from constant fatigue. This may include back sleeping difficulties, and seems no matter how much sleep they still get tired. 6th Back pain and muscle aches – Depression may increase pain and discomfort for people who already suffer from such conditions. 7th Appetite and weight problems – People with depression may experience both a lack of appetite or desire deep in some foods. This may be accompanied by weight gain or loss. Another problem for people suffering from more severe forms of depression may be even more difficult to diagnose because it may be more severe delusions and hallucinations. May become increasingly difficult to know whether a person with depression is in fact some of the symptoms or if they invent. It is also easier for many people to accept the physical symptoms of depression, when the psychiatric symptoms. There are many people and cultures to the social stigma of a place for everyone with a mental illness. E ‘and therefore easier to accept and treat a disease more benign, it is natural to address the issues in mind. What many do not realize is that with successful treatment of depression at the base with either therapy or medication or both of the physical symptoms of depression will often be resolved. Unfortunately, treating the physical manifestations will do anything for the real depression and without adequate treatment, usually continue to worsen. It is therefore important to treat depression in itself, if a patient is to see any relief from physical symptoms of depression.

Symptoms of Depression – are you Depressed?

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Image taken on by .
Depression is a serious mental disorder not to be confused with â??normalâ? bad or depressed mood experienced by everyone sometimes. If a depression sufferer does not realise that he is depressed his life may be virtual hell without any obvious exit scenario. Many such patients drag along for years without treatment that could easily alleviate their depression. Therefore, it is very important to know the symptoms of depression and to be able to read the signs of depression when they occur. An early realisation that one experiences the symptoms of depression can in the most extreme cases virtually save lives, and even in light cases of depression often guarantee proper treatment of the disorder and a reversion to a good and joyful life. So what are the signs of depression most commonly seen?

One of the common signs of depression is a general loss of energy leading to persistent lethargy and to a lack of interest in most daily activities or even ones that one previously liked, such as hobbies. This goes often also hand in hand with social withdrawal. Another symptom of depression, probably the one most often associated with this mental disorder, is a deep and prolonged sadness, commonly without any apparent cause, which may even lead to unexplainable crying spells. Feelings of worthlessness and guilt without a rational cause are also usual signs of depression. The depressed patient also suffers from a profound pessimism about his own future and the future of his social network and often even the world in general. This is often coupled with a total indifference towards almost anything and anyone. Indecisiveness and an inability to concentrate properly on tasks at hand are also symptoms of depression that occur regularly. The depressed patient may have problems to fall asleep and to keep sleeping without waking up in the middle of the night, leading to permanent sleepiness during the day. Interestingly there are also cases where the patient sleeps more than usual. Another, though relatively minor, symptom of depression is loss of appetite. Among the most serious signs of depression is obsessive thinking of disease and death, and even suicidal thoughts, which in the worst case may lead to suicide attempts. Anxiety is also often associated with depression as is a general irritability and agitation. Besides those more well-known signs and symptoms of depression organic diseases are often associated with depression. Patients suffering from unexplainable organ pains are sadly often treated purely for the organic disease, while the underlying cause may well be depression or another mental disorder.

Concluding it must be pointed out that one does not necessarily need to experience all symptoms of depression to be regarded depressed. Also, the intensity of the symptoms of depression may vary over time and from patient to patient, also depending on the kind of depression she has. In any case, if you or anyone you know shows all or more of the signs of depression listed above it is definitely advised to take action sooner rather than later. To get a proper diagnosis of the condition the first way should lead to a medical practitioner who will also be able to verify the symptoms of depression and to advise on the best treatment for the specific depression case. Always keep in mind: Depression is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide, but there are many highly effective ways available to treat it once it is properly diagnosed.
