Another uni project: “hsaapdpy” or “manic depressant”. No, I wasn’t influenced by the Joker from Batman, I was influenced by creepy clowns from an illustrated fairytale book that I was read when I was a little girl. We were assigned this in December or November, just a 2 day project where we were supposed to make a film using still shots and background music to respond to a poem. The poem was entitled “manicdepressant” with only 3 vague lines: “Sometimes I’M HAPPY Sometimes I’m sad; sometimes I’M hsaapdpy.” I was reminded of clowns from the manic way the poet wrote, somehow, which is why my face is painted so obscurely. Happy and sad and twisted and crazy and manic and terrifying and dark clowns. All of these. So, bear the lines of the poem in mind when you watch this video, with particular regard to the last line in the parts that appear to become muddled and confusing. It’s only 48 seconds long.

In the world of science, diet and the manic depression, especially the manic depression, are really challenging for doctors all over the world. It’s very little researched and the cures are not that productive.
In the past, people suffering from diet and the manic depression used to lose so much because of this disorder; they used to lose their family, their friends, and due to lack of treatment, they even lost their lives. In our days, modern technology and medicine made some small steps towards curing and more important, helping those people suffering from diet and the manic depression.
Before starting to treat the depression, bipolar disorders and other related syndromes, doctors need to learn what they are, what exactly causes them and what the best solution to fight against it is. This needs to be done with the minimum effort and stress from the patients point of view. This has never been easy however, especially over the last few decades. Some breakthrough has been made, like the use of Lithium in the curing process, the same element that is used for seizure attacks.
In some ways the diet and the manic depression are somehow related to the seizure attacks that some people experience. There are also other ways to approach the problem, through psychology. Holistic Psychology is not just a simple prescription for the treatment.
It assumes that the ill patient is ready and at a level where he or she actively wants to recover. This implies a strong will, and the capability to go over unscripted and unexpected obstacles. In the diet and the manic depression, the diet is very important. A lot of time over the last few decades, this aspect wasn’t even considered as a factor involved in the process of depression. But nowadays, researchers have made a step forward in this direction too, and how some lighted minds suggested, we should pay more attention to this.
An equilibrated diet may lead to unexpected results in a treatment in a pleasant way. The overall situation will start to change to a positive side, and the patient is feeling more active, more motivated, etc. , feelings that are useful for psychologists in their treatments.
Nutrition and exercises also play a very important role in the treatment of the manic depression. In order to stay healthy and fit, the body needs exercise. What you need is to find an exercise program that best feats your needs and follow it strictly every day, or at least each week, as it can be excellent for your overall health.

Manic depressive refers to mood swings from overly “high” (manic) to overly “low” (depressed). Another name for manic-depressive illness is bipolar disorder. This refers to a person’s mood alternating between “poles” of mania (highs) and depression (lows). Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes unusual changes in the person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. Depression or mania is diagnosed if a person demonstrates a certain number of symptoms. Interestingly, a mood change is not a necessary symptom for the diagnosis of depression or mania. A manic-depressive illness or “bipolar mood disorder” is a disturbance of a person’s mood characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania. Switching from one mood to another is referred to as a mood swing. Mood swings can be mild, moderate or severe and are accompanied by changes in thinking and behavior. Mania is an extreme sense of well-being, energy and optimism. It can be so intense that it affects your thinking and judgement. You may believe strange things about yourself, make bad dec
Manic depression is a treatable illness which is found in about one percent of the population. It often first occurs in the late teens or early ’20s. People with manic depression experience periods of depression as described earlier, as well as periods of mania. During an episode of mania, a person may have some or all of the following symptoms: excessive energy, racing flights of ideas, vigorous denial that anything is wrong, pressured speech, grandiose thoughts or inflated self-esteem, overspending, high heart rate and irregular breathing, alternating decreases and increases of sleep, impaired judgement, extreme irritability or rapid, unpredictable mood changes. isions, and behave in embarrassing, harmful and – occasionally – dangerous ways.
Everyone has occasional highs and lows in their moods. But people with bipolar disorder have extreme mood swings. They can go from feeling very sad, despairing, helpless, worthless, and hopeless (depression) to feeling as if they are on top of the world, hyperactive, creative, and grandiose (mania). This disease is called bipolar disorder because the mood of a person with bipolar disorder can alternate between two completely opposite poles, euphoric happiness and extreme sadness.
The extremes of mood usually occur in cycles. In between these mood swings, people with bipolar disorder are able to function normally, hold a job, and have a normal family life. The episodes of mood swings tend to become closer together with age.
From high to low. From mania to depression. From recklessness to listlessness. These are the extremes associated with bipolar disorder, a mental illness characterized by mood instability that can be serious and disabling. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic-depression or manic-depressive illness — manic behavior is one extreme of this disorder, and depression is the other.
Manic depression often is not recognized by the patient, relatives, friends or even physicians. However, recognizing the mood states that occur is essential. Treatment can help a person with bipolar disorder avoid harmful consequences such as destruction of personal relationships, job loss and suicide.
All antidepressants can cause swings from depression to hypomania or mania and sometimes cause rapid swings between them. Therefore, these drugs are used only for short periods, and their effect on mood is closely monitored. At the first sign of a swing to hypomania or mania, the antidepressant is discontinued. Optimally, most people with manic-depressive illness should be given mood-stabilizing drugs, such as lithium

When people discuss bi-polar disorder they refer to a condition known as manic depression. This is associated with unusual and quick switches from a good mood to a sour mood, when someone says “wow, they’re bi-polar”. It is just another in the many forms of depression. Manic depression is not the same as just being sad or upset for over something in particular. Manic depression is more serious than that. Another stage of depression is the diagnosis for bi-polar disorder. Manic depression is diagnosed in millions of cases each year in America. Depression of some form touches 17 million Americans annually. Unfortunately only about1/3 of those will be diagnosed and receive help. Nothing can be cured if the victim doesn’t go for help. Many Americans are hesitant to confront a disease that is categorized as a mental illness. They do not want to be stereotyped as one who must be out of their mind. Brain diseases are generally quite complex. When diagnosed there is a stigma that isn’t easy to handle. However, as with any form of depression, the affliction does not make you less a person. It does not mean that you are a nut case. It means you have an illness like any other. If it’s identified it can be cured. The causes of all forms of depression are still being examined in the medical profession. Depression is caused by a wide range of issues. Doctors take into consideration many things such as biological factors, the environment, and DNA. A chemical imbalance in the brain helps cause it. Stress is another major factor in depression. Daily life brings stress, period. Issues at school, with loved ones, or just the daily grind can cause it. Depression does not play favorites. It’s a disease for rich people and for poor people. It is not racist. No racial group is less likely to contract this disease. All the types of depression have similar symptoms. Dramatic shifts in personality and up and down mood swings are some. The advent of sleeplessness is another sign of depression. Helpless feelings, or feelings that the future holds no hope are signs. When everyday life becomes a chore, that’s depression. But the depression afflicted have hope. Help is available. Prescription medications as well as natural herbs can cure it. There are also medical professionals that can help your illness through ‘talk therapy’”. Support groups can be of assistance with manic depression. The first step in the cure is seeking the assistance.

Scientists have long studied the link between bipolar disorder and sleep in manic-depressive patients. The intense episodes of manic-depressive and clear impact on sleep quality and quantity of sleep that a person receives daily bipolar.
How many scientists have discovered how good is that the manic / depressive cycle works both ways. In other words, the lack of sleep can trigger manic episodes. Studies show that up to 60 percent suffer from bipolar manic attacks have experienced some form of disruption of their normal sleep cycle before the attack.
We’ve all had experienced at the most convenient as possible, we were interrupted by life. Social rhythm disruption or SRD, is the events that upset our lives as routine as an established sleep pattern. In normal people, ie those who are not suffering from bipolar disorder, this is not a major problem. We back away and finally back to our regular pattern. In bipolar patients may be a social upheaval in their sleep patterns directly activate a manic attack.
That is why many health professionals to advise their patients with bipolar establish a sleep schedule for themselves and stick to it. This means going to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning – even on weekends. Keep this schedule will keep “social rhythm disruption” to a minimum and reduce the likelihood of a manic attack. As a general rule, after a sleep schedule also means not taking a nap when you’ve had trouble sleeping the night before. Take a nap would be simply another form of social disintegration and the rate would not help in the long term.
Lack of sleep makes one cranky and irritable enough. Most of us will only be able to sleep the next night and “get our sleep,” and may well be the next day. Bipolar people can not always do it. They may be able to fall asleep, leading to a manic attack the next morning. Manic attack reduce their desire to sleep and not sleeping more the next night either. This is a frustrating and potentially deadly cycle.
Can be difficult for a bipolar person to keep a calendar to sleep without the help of family members. Including family members in treatment discussions with employer health care is good for everyone. Helps family members to understand how incredibly important that the patient is a bipolar regular sleep routine. Help the person to give emotional support and bipolar him feel less abnormal.
Strong family support is particularly important when the bipolar patient is a teenager who in many cases are already going through a stressful period of his life in an age when peer pressure tends to make outcasts of those who do not seem to be normal. But even in cases of adult bipolar disorder, can be supported by a loving family, not to be underestimated.

Among all types of depression manic depressive disorder or bipolar disorder is by far the least common. Nonetheless, according to recent studies and depending on the interpretation of the results of these studies about 1. 3 to 6. 4 percent of the population can be classified as having manic depressive disorder. This type of depression is characterized by mood swings between severe emotional lows (the depressive state) and highs (the manic state. In general manic depressive disorder is categorized as either Bipolar Type I or Bipolar Type II – the former defined by mania in its extreme form, the latter characterized by a less extreme expression of mania called hypo-mania.
The manic phases of manic depressive disorder are defined by a dramatic increase in energy leading to over-activity and over-confidence. The patient is also commonly over-talkative with a high speech-rate. The attention span is drastically lowered as is the ability to think rationally and to behave properly in social settings. This in turn leads to the affected person devising and pursuing unrealistic and oftentimes dangerous ideas, as well as to the unintentional creation of embarrassing situations in public. If left untreated mania can develop into a psychotic state. The hypo-mania characteristic for Bipolar Type II is less destructive than full-blown mania insofar as the symptoms are much weaker and usually last for a shorter period of time. The hypo-manic state can even lead to creative outbursts and, at least temporarily, to unusually high innovative problem solving skills.
The depressive phases of manic depressive disorder are in no way different than the depressive phases of other kinds of depression. The patient experiences prolonged phases of sadness, often without a cause, and a loss of energy leading to lethargy. He is indifferent and pessimistic; feels guilty and worthless; shows a loss of appetite and a change in sleep patterns – with insomnia being very common; is indecisive and unable to concentrate; experiences anxiety, irritability and anger. Furthermore, the patient may have recurring thoughts of death or suicide.
Sometimes manic depressive disorder patients experience a mixed state where certain aspects of the manic and the depressive state occur next to each other. For example it is possible that a patient experiences insomnia, paranoia, anxiety and suicidal thoughts as well as agitation, aggressiveness and hyperactivity. Mixed episodes of manic depressive disorder often are the most destructive mental state leading to self-mutilation, suicidal activities and substance abuse if untreated.
While some sufferers of manic depressive disorder experience only a few manic and depressive episodes during their lifetime the opposite is true for many other cases of this type of depression. Rapid cycling of mania and depression is hard to control and has a worse prognosis than the other types of manic depressive disorder. Interestingly the use of antidepressants can have a negative effect on patients experiencing rapid cycles or can even induce the rapid cycling state.
Concluding it has to be said that manic depressive disorder is a serious condition and arguably the worst of all types of depression. Probably to a large extent genetically pre-determined it cannot be healed. However, the condition can be alleviated and controlled by proper medicinal management and anyone suffering from manic depressive disorder is well-advised to seek medical help as soon as possible.
