No, the people who “owned” the homes actually “owned” the property.
Remember, before the “fake money” created by the mortgage industry, homes were super cheap. When all that fake money became available, the demand for ownership skyrocketed and the supply of money skyrocketed.
Mortgages have driven the price of homes up.
