Depression ? Symptoms and Causes of Depression

March 12th, 2010

Image taken on by .
Research shows that depression runs in families and that some people inherit genes that make it more likely for them to get depressed. Not everyone who has the genetic makeup for depression gets depressed, though. And many people who have no family history of depression have the condition. So although genes are one factor, they aren’t the single cause of depression.

The effect of maternal-fetal stress on depression is currently an exciting area of research. It seems that maternal stress during pregnancy can increase the chance that the child will be prone to depression as an adult, particularly if there is a genetic vulnerability. It is thought that the mother’s circulating stress hormones can influence the development of the fetus’ brain during pregnancy. This altered fetal brain development occurs in ways that predispose the child to the risk of depression as an adult. Further research is still necessary to clarify how this happens.

Symptoms of Depression

A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.

You may have physical aches and pains which appear to have no physical cause, such as back pain.

Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Harsh criticism of perceived faults and mistakes.

Problems sleeping, especially in the early morning, or wanting to sleep all of the time

You spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong, what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person. You may also feel guilty sometimes about being critical of others (or even thinking critically about them).

Feeling sad or “down” for a few days is not the same as exhibiting symptoms of depression. A clinical case of depression symptoms as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental.

Having a poor appetite, no interest in food and losing weight (though some people overeat and put on weight – ‘comfort eating’).

Thinking about suicide – this is very common. If you feel this way, talk to somebody about it. If you think somebody else might be thinking this way, ask them about it – IT WILL NOT MAKE THEM MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT SUICIDE.

Significant changes in weight when not attempting to gain or lose (a gain or loss of 5% or more in a month) may be indicative of depression. In children, this may also present as a failure to make expected weight gains.

Causes of Depression

Biochemical: Some evidence from high-tech imaging studies indicates that people with depression have physical changes in their brains. The significance of these changes is still uncertain but may eventually help pinpoint causes. The naturally occurring brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, which are linked to mood, also may play a role in depression. Hormonal imbalances also could be a culprit.

Depression can be linked to events in your life, such as the death of someone you love, a divorce or job loss. Taking certain medicines, abusing drugs or alcohol, or having other illnesses can also lead to depression. Depression isn’t caused by personal weakness, laziness or lack of willpower.

Certain environmental situations, such as stress or breakup of important attachments, also may precipitate depression, especially in vulnerable persons.

Genes. Some studies show that depression is more common in people whose biological family members also have the condition. Researchers are trying to find genes that may be involved in causing depression.

What Is The Cause Of Depression?

March 12th, 2010

Image taken on by .
Many people simply want to know what the cause of depression is. If you are dealing with depression, you probably would also like to know what causes it, too. There are many different reasons why someone may have bouts of depression. It is impossible to pinpoint one specific reason and label it the cause of depression.
Biological vulnerability is one cause of depression. Some depressions can run in families. For instance, bipolar depression and major depression seems to run in families. Studies have been done which show that individuals who have bipolar disorder in each generation of their family have a different genetic makeup than individuals who do not suffer from bipolar depression. However, it is important to note that not every person that has the genetic makeup that would make them vulnerable to bipolar depression will develop it. However, there are people who develop depression who have no family history of the depression. So, suffice it to say that while biological factors can be one cause of depression, it is not the only thing that could be the cause of depression.
People who are vulnerable to depression seem to have a variety of psychological factors involved. Individuals who have a low self-esteem, who are pessimistic and who suffer from anxiety and stress seem to be more prone to having bouts of depression. A person’s environment can also have much to do with the cause of depression. If an individual grows up in a home where discouragement is the norm and pessimism reigns, the person may be vulnerable to depression.
It should be noted that life can be the cause of depression. If you have experienced the death of a loved one, gone through a chronic illness, have work problems, a family crisis or problems with your finances, you may be vulnerable to becoming depressed. All of these scenarios can trigger depression, especially for someone who may have biological or psychological factors already present.
Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. Millions of people are diagnosed with depression each year. The best thing you can do if you are showing signs of depression is to be honest with yourself. If you think you are dealing with depression, go to your doctor. Many times taking an anti depression medication for a set period of time can kick the depression to the curb. If you do not seek out treatment for your depression, it could become worse. Depression can truly debilitate a person if left untreated. No one can “snap out” of major depression. Admitting a problem with depression is not a sign of weakness. If anything, it is a sign of strength.
If you know someone and he or he is showing signs of depression, it is a good idea to talk to him or her about it. Many times people get into a slump when they are depressed and they need someone to take them by the hand so they can seek help. If a person is suffering from major depression, setting up a doctor’s appointment may seem like a monumental task. Offer to do it for your loved one. Accompany your loved one to the doctor if it would make him or her feel better. Never put down someone who is suffering from depression or tell them to “get over it. ” This kind of attitude can plunge a person into a more intense depression. If someone you love is showing signs of suicide, get help for him or her immediately. Don’t worry about the repercussions or if your loved one will be angry with you. The most important thing is that your loved one gets help.

In the absence of research and development many medical ailments were earlier treated as incurable mammoths. Bipolar Disorder is one among them.
Earlier the individuals suffering with this kind of disorder was often regarded as a ‘very moody person’ or in extreme cases the family wrote them off saying that they have become insane. Later on the scientists made us realize that this disorder is a – Manic Depression, also known by the name of – Bipolar Disorder.
Though this disease is not new, along with the name many other things regarding this disease are quite new like the help we can lend to such patients. As its effects can be very wide spread and deadly, the treatment is as crucial.
This ailment is too dangerous as its patients can also become suicidal. Here are some important features of this ailment:
1. The bipolar disorder is illustrated by the extreme mood changes that is the person acts manically euphoric and/or extremely depressed. Hence it is also called as the manic-depressive illness.
2. The mood fluctuations in such patients can go to any extremes with in any period of time that is hours, days and/or months.
3. This ailment can take place right from the late teenage stage and continue until death. However, there have also been cases where the ailment started right from the childhood and got delayed up to the adult years.
4. While mood swings happen with all of us now and then, very few actually experience the radical changes that can be characterized as bipolar disorder. In such cases the patients’ day-to-day life and relationships are also significantly affected. Their academics, occupation, interaction with others all happen differently.
In case you want to check if you are afflicted with the unfortunate situation, read through the symptoms & signs of the disease carefully:
Signs & Symptoms in the Depressive Phase
1. Pessimistic – the patient cry for hours together
2. Feeling of hopelessness
3. Low self esteem
4. Diminished libido
5. Progressive decrease in the energy level and the day to day activities
6. Apathetic
7. Anti-social
8. Cognitive difficulties
9. Always anxious and irritable
10. Changes in weight that is unusual weight gain or loss
11. Either oversleeping or insomnia
12. Drug abuse or alcohol abuse
13. Suicidal ideations
Signs & Symptoms in the Manic Phase
1. Extremely euphoric
2. Aggressive
3. Impulsive, irresponsibly wild
4. Excessively adventurous & involved in activities which are quite threatening to life like drugs, sex, excessive spending, violence, etc.
5. Insomniac
6. Flight of ideas
7. Exceedingly talkative
8. Very outgoing
9. Self-centered
10. At times have hallucinations or delusions
11. Easily distracted, restless
12. Patients have no idea as to the problems their behavior is creating
In case you suspect to have any of these symptoms and your abnormal behavior is causing problems in the errands, its time that you must seek professional help in order to lead a normal life again.
While there are numerous tests that are able to differentiate the bipolar patient from the unremarkable sad and/or brisk individuals, as such there is no specific test available to define bipolar patient. The primary reason for this is that the symptoms & signs of bipolar disorder are pretty similar to several other mental aberrations such as substance abuse disorders, ADHD, schizophrenia, or borderline personally disorder.
However, the physicians have drafted a battery of tests that can identify the potential patients of bipolar disorder. The basic tests used by the professionals are as follows:
1. Medical Examinations
With this type of examination the doctor is able to assess the patient as to what are his/her probable grounds of mood swings.
2. Oral & Written Psychiatric Questionnaire and/or Evaluations
Well researched and designed by the psychiatrists for years together, these questionnaires often yield very accurate details.
3. Family History
When the bipolar disorder is there a person’s blood relation, he/she is quite a prospective patient of the disease.
4. Medical History
Here the doctor checks on the medications that you have taken in the past as certain medicines can trigger bipolar disorder and the mood swings in the individual.
5. Interviewing the family members
The doctor interviews the family to scratch out each every minute detail of the patient’s behavior. Being the first witness of the changes in the individual, these are a very important excerpt for the doctor to cure the patient of bipolar disorder.
6. Mood Swing Episodes
While all above mentioned test create quite a profound ground for the doctor to understand the ailment of an individual, it becomes rather difficult to cure the person when he/she is not able to understand that they are ill. Hence, it becomes imperative to the doctor to trace the absolute & careful history regarding the patient’s mood swings. As compared to the normal people, the people suffering with such an ailment while in the mania stage can be extremely happy for at least 4 consecutive days at a stretch. They get distracted quite easily, they are very talkative, and have a high flight of ideas.
7. Depression Episodes
The ones who have repetitive episodes of depression are often suspected to have the bipolar disorder. Such patients show a very positive response to the immediate treatment but the episodes remain constant and the frequent relapses make the situation rather worst. By and by, they stop responding to the anti-depressant treatment being given to them.
In case this sort of ailment is diagnosed in its early stage, it can be controlled effectively with a combination of the psychopharmacologic medications & psychotherapy. Besides the treatment, a very strong & constant emotional support from the family & friends is indeed imperative for the patients suffering with bipolar disorder.
Make sure that you choose the apt medical professional and/or real friend in need to help you through the struggle. Help nowadays is also available just a click away on the World Wide Web or the internet. Many institutions now have established their websites for self of such individuals.
Remember, one who is suspected of any mental disorder is considered innocent until & unless he/she is examined & diagnosed by some legitimate doctor.

Seeing the Signs of Depression

March 12th, 2010

Image taken on by .
How can you get a real feel for what depression is?  Most people who get depressed for the first time have a hard time realizing what it is. As a matter of fact, it is often someone close to you who asks what is wrong, what is going on. This sort of makes you think that yes, there is a problem and there are things which are going wrong. Here are some very typical symptoms of depression Things depressed people say: Talking about feelings of sadness or emptiness Saying they are hopeless that things will get better Saying that they are no good and worthless Saying that they have no interest in anything Personality Changes: Unable to make decisions Unable to concentrate and remember Having trouble at home, work, or school Hiding out, not talking Slowed down movement Common Complaints of Depression: No energy, feeling slowed down Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, waking early Appetite problems and gaining or losing weight Many physical complaints like headache, backache Feeling guilty about past actions Feeling unloved and unwanted Obvious Behavior Changes: Unable to Stop Crying Acting irritable, restless, and angry Insisting on being alone Stopping normal activities like hobbies or interests Taking drugs or heavy alcohol use Dropping Hints About: Death and Dying Committing Suicide Your life after he or she is gone Giving things away Seeing loved one who have died It’s finally going to be over Here are some stories about people who have been depressed and how they learned about their illness: Jane’s story: “It was really hard to get out of bed in the morning. I just wanted to hide under the covers and not talk to anyone. I didn’t feel much like eating and I lost a lot of weight. Nothing seemed fun anymore. I was tired all the time, but I wasn’t sleeping well at night. I knew that I had to keep going because I’ve got kids and a job. It just felt so impossible, like nothing was going to change or get better. I started missing days from work, and a friend noticed that something wasn’t right. She talked to me about the time that she had been really depressed and had gotten help from her doctor. I called my doctor and talked about how I was feeling. She had me come in for a checkup and gave me the name of a psychiatrist who she had sent other patients to who were depressed. Now, I’m seeing the psychiatrist once a month and taking anti depressant medicine. Everything didn’t get better overnight, but I find myself more able to enjoy life and my children. And I don’t think about death the way I did before. It scared me because I have kids to rise and they need me. Ed’s story: Things in my life were going all right. I had just finished college and was starting a new job. My family was really proud of me. But inside, I was feeling terrible. At first I was feeling sad all the time, even though I had no reason to be. Then the sadness turned into anger, and I started having fights with my family and friends. I felt really bad about myself, like I wasn’t good enough for anyone. It got so bad that I wished I would go to bed and never wake up. My older brother, who I always looked up to, saw that I wasn’t acting like my usual self. He told me straight out that I seemed depressed and that I should talk to a doctor about it. I hate going to the doctor. I thought, ‘No way am I going in and tell some guy I’m a wuss. ‘ But after a few weeks, I started having problems at work too. Sometimes I wouldn’t show up because I wasn’t able to sleep the night before. When I got fired, I knew I had to listen to my brother and get help. I saw a doctor at the health clinic. He told me I had a common illness called depression and that treatment could help. So I started taking anti depressants.   I had to switch around because one seemed to help but had side effects and another didn’t work as well as I needed. It took about 5 months but finally I started feeling much better. I think I’m ready to get started with my life now. These are just sample stories and maybe you do not see yourself here.   But you can see that very ordinary people get depression and can get better if they seek out help.

What You Need To Know About Bipolar Disease

March 9th, 2010

Image taken on by .
When many hear the words “bipolar disorder”, they immediately think of people placed in straitjackets and taken away to the nearest lunatic asylum. Many of these same people are not aware that bipolar disorder is one of the most common mental illnesses in the U.S., and can vary from mild to severe symptoms, had very few of these figures ever to really engage in a mental hospital for treatment.
Bipolar disorder is caused, the doctors now believe, from chemical imbalances in the brain or irregular thyroid hormone levels. The disease tends to run in families, although this does not mean that if my grandmother Ada was diagnosed with a mental disorder, it will automatically develop the disease. People by the end of the twentieth century, the disease was very difficult to diagnose, and many were wrongly labeled as schizophrenia or severe anxiety.
Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and therefore relatively normal life, and most of them also regularly work from the company’s blue-collar positions. When detected early enough, patients often respond well to medication and psychotherapy treatments, ranging from simple consultations to one-on-one therapy, group therapy programs.
For others, bipolar disorder, be devastating to both personal and professional lives, and some do not respond to any treatment for all drugs. For some patients, episodes of depression, with periods of extreme happiness, often takes its toll of failed relationships, lost jobs and feelings of worthlessness and failure.
While most of us experience periods of “blues” or the day when we seem to go on Cloud Nine, someone who suffers from bipolar disorder will experience these moments in the extreme. Chronic repetition of this time is exhausting both the victim and the close friends and family, and can lead to isolation and lack of interest in participating in events and activities that are used to give pleasure.
Recognizing that not everything would be fine with someone who is important. If you or someone you know is experiencing mood swings from severe depression infinity of states of extreme elation, and then again it is important to monitor these mood swings and note the length and severity. The early detection of disease is important to avoid a downward spiral that can lead to suicidal thoughts for the victim.
Although there are drugs and methods of psychotherapy to help people who currently suffer from bipolar disorder, the condition is still a stigma that prevents many from seeking help. Unfortunately, many people suffer from erratic mood swings of the conditions are too embarrassed or humiliated by the idea of having a mental state to seek help. Instead, withdraw further and further away from their loved ones.
If you think you or someone you know has suffered from this condition, talk to them. Encourage them to seek help and, above all, be as favorable as possible. You can make a difference in the world for those who suffer from bipolar disorder.

Use Depression Medication With A Lot Of Caution

March 9th, 2010

Image taken on by .
Depression is a common health problem that no one would find in life. But this condition is among the challenges that people are not easy to escape. For this reason, had drugs in depression so that patients can easily get help in this situation when you are in it. These drugs are often essential to proper recovery of the patient in the difficult process of recovery. Sometimes the need for drugs are combined to achieve results, you need something that usually is not new for depressed patients. Mood stabilizer is among the drugs most commonly used today depression. E ‘is predominantly used for bipolar depression, which is used to control and stabilize mood so that you are not swinging from high (manic) to low (depression). A good example of a mood stabilizer lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). This stabilizer is usually given in the first-line treatment of manic episodes in which they occurred. Unfortunately, in most cases, mood stabilizers often have to be taken during the patient’s life, in order to avoid a recurrence of bipolar depression. One of the main side effects of this drug is that when taken it can lead to damage to the developing countries fetus or a child. The anti-seizure medication also known as an anticonvulsant, is another medication depression that can be used to stop the mood swings occur. But in contrast to the mood stabilizing anticonvulsants are usually intended for use by patients with any type of depression called bipolar rapid cycling bipolar disorder and not to any other type of depression. Among the drugs commonly used today, anticonvulsants valproate (Depakote), lamotrigine (Lamictal) and valproate (Depakene). All these drugs can still obtained from any pharmacy that suits you, but should be taken properly by doctors to avoid the mishaps that can easily comply with them. Every time the anti-seizure does not respond well to patient, antipsychotics such as risperidone (Risperdal) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) can easily be used as a substitute. Just as the anti-seizure therapy, this depression drug works by regulating the mood swings of the patient, thus preventing them from reaching extremes. Even if the anti-psychotic drugs may be to treat the problems such as depression, sometimes can increase the risk of getting diabetes, hypertension and obesity and therefore not many doctors recommend this type of medication. So before you decide to use anti-psychotic medication consult your doctor before his conduct correct diagnosis for you, so you know, some which is appropriate to use this drug or not. For depression anxiety, are anti-anxiety drugs benzodiazepines generally recommended by many doctors as a great help in reducing the intensity of the episodes were eager to be experienced by the patient. Moreover, these drugs help the patient to sleep. Other anti-anxiety known as quetiapine (Seroquel), recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration around the world. This medicine is considered one of the best drugs for depression, because it can treat both the manic and depressive episodes, without ever leaving the side effects are very late patient. After experiencing depression drugs that can come with side effects, it is often useful to talk to your doctor about constant monitoring of all health problems could be due to this.

Options In Treating Depression

March 9th, 2010

Image taken on by .
There are lots of options for the treatment of depression, but there is no guarantee it will work! Now we know that millions of depressed patients who are taking medications that relieve symptoms and never get to the root of depression. When I say work, I apologize if I smile, as we now know that the cake is divided into three sections, more or less equal.

The first part (about 33%) for those patients who actually leave the black hole of depression. Lucky them! And the other two discs? The other third receive partial remission, while the third did not get any positive results for everyone. Pharmaceutical companies never mention this. What is certain is that 100% of patients treated with these drugs have some side effects, and many give up just for them.

There has been research on the effectiveness of the fight against the so-called antidepressants, which saw more than 100,000 cases. Two researchers at the University of Nevada School of Medicine has commented on this study, which concluded that the results clearly show that the first option in the treatment of depression should always be some form of therapy and / or counseling rather than drugs.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help patients get rid of the vicious cycle of negative emotions and thoughts that lead to a spiral of pessimism, despair, and in many cases of suicide. What is shocking, of course, is that all other options for treating depression, self-help, diet, exercise, yoga and meditation are all regarded as secondary options. Now we know that many of these options works better for depression and drugs have no side effects.

Similarly, the herbal treatments for depression have not had a good press at all, which is more unjust, in my opinion. But in Europe the power of Prozac was arrested and herbal St. John’s wort and passion flower are considered as full-fledged alternative to anti-depressants and is often the first line of treatment of depression, SAD and other depressive.

Why not look into an herbal treatment for depression as a valid treatment strategy? You have to look closely at the company’s reputation and their staff and processes for production and if there is no control by the FDA. Vegetable ingredients should always be as clean as possible and is grown in areas free from pesticides.

The company in the link below meets all these requirements, but you can check it for you.
