The Land of Dreaming

Sensibility

Sensibility refers to an acute perception of or responsiveness toward something, such as the emotions of another. This concept emerged in eighteenth-century Britain, and was closely associated with studies of sense perception as the means through which knowledge is gathered. It also became associated with sentimental moral philosophy.

One of the first of such texts would be John Locke’s Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), where he says, "I conceive that Ideas in the Understanding, are coeval with Sensation; which is such an Impression or Motion, made in some part of the Body, as makes it be taken notice of in the Understanding."[1] George Cheyne and other medical writers wrote of "The English Malady," also called "hysteria" in women or "hypochondria" in men, a condition with symptoms that closely resemble the modern diagnosis of clinical depression. Cheyne considered this malady to be the result of over-taxed nerves. At the same time, theorists asserted that individuals who had ultra-sensitive nerves would have keener senses, and thus be more aware of beauty and moral truth. Thus, while it was considered a physical and/or emotional fragility, sensibility was also widely perceived as a virtue.

Originating in philosophical and scientific writings, sensibility became an English-language literary movement, particularly in the then-new genre of the novel. Such works, called sentimental novels, featured individuals who were prone to sensibility, often weeping, fainting, feeling weak, or having fits in reaction to an emotionally moving experience. If one were especially sensible, one might react this way to scenes or objects that appear insignificant to others. This reactivity was considered an indication of a sensible person’s ability to perceive something intellectually or emotionally stirring in the world around them. However, the popular sentimental genre soon met with a strong backlash, as anti-sensibility readers and writers contended that such extreme behavior was mere histrionics, and such an emphasis on one’s own feelings and reactions a sign of narcissism. Samuel Johnson, in his portrait of Miss Gentle, articulated this criticism:

She daily exercises her benevolence by pitying every misfortune that happens to every family within her circle of notice; she is in hourly terrors lest one should catch cold in the rain, and another be frighted by the high wind. Her charity she shews by lamenting that so many poor wretches should languish in the streets, and by wondering what the great can think on that they do so little good with such large estates.[2]

Objections to sensibility emerged on other fronts. For one, some conservative thinkers believed in a priori concepts, that is, knowledge that exists independent of experience, such as innate knowledge believed to be imparted by God. Theorists of the a priori distrusted sensibility because of its over-reliance on experience for knowledge. Also, in the last decades of the eighteenth century, anti-sensibility thinkers often associated the emotional volatility of sensibility with the exuberant violence of the French Revolution, and in response to fears of revolution coming to Britain, sensible figures were coded as anti-patriotic or even politically subversive. Maria Edgeworth’s Leonora, for example, depicts the "sensible" Olivia as a villainess who contrives her passions or at least bends them to suit her selfish wants; the text also makes a point to say that Olivia has lived in France and thus adopted "French" manners. In addition, the effusive nature of most sentimental heroes, such as Harley in Henry Mackenzie’s The Man of Feeling, was often decried by literary critics as weak effeminacy, helping to discredit sentimental novels, and to a lesser extent, all novels, as unmanly works.

Charles Mingus
Clinical Depression
Charles Mingus, Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz musician, composer, bandleader, and human rights activist.
Charles Mingus was born in Nogales, Arizona. He was raised largely in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California. His mother’s paternal heritage was Chinese and English, while historical records indicate that his father was the illegitimate offspring of a black farmhand and his Swedish employer’s white granddaughter,

His mother allowed only church-related music in their home, but Mingus developed an early love for jazz, especially the music of Duke Ellington. He studied trombone and later cello. Much of the cello technique he learned was applicable to double bass when he took up the instrument in high school. He studied five years with H. Rheinshagen, principal bassist of the New York Philharmonic, and compositional techniques with Lloyd Reese,

In addition to his musical and intellectual proliferation, Mingus goes into great detail about his perhaps overstated sexual exploits. He claims to have had over 31 affairs over the course of his life (including 26 prostitutes in one sitting). This does not include any of his five wives (he claims to have been married to two of them simultaneously). In addition, he asserts that he held a brief career as a pimp. This has never been confirmed.

Mingus’s autobiography also serves as an insight into his psyche, as well as his attitudes about race and society.[Autobiographic accounts of abuse at the hands of his father from an early age, being bullied as a child, his removal from a white musician's union, and grappling with disapproval while married to white women and other examples of the hardship and prejudice

As respected as Mingus was for his musical talents, he was sometimes feared for his occasional violent onstage temper, which was at times directed at members of his band, and other times aimed at the audience. He was physically large, prone to obesity (especially in his later years), and was by all accounts often intimidating and frightening when expressing anger or displeasure. Mingus was prone to clinical depression. He tended to have brief periods of extreme creative activity, intermixed with fairly long periods of greatly decreased output.

When confronted with a nightclub audience talking and clinking ice in their glasses while he performed, Mingus stopped his band and loudly chastised the audience, stating "Isaac Stern doesn't have to put up with this sh& amp;He once played a prank on a similar group of nightclub chatterers by silencing his band for several seconds, allowing the loud audience members to be clearly heard, then continuing as the rest of the audience snickered at the oblivious ,

Guitarist and singer Jackie Paris was a first-hand witness to Mingus's irascibility. Paris recalls his time in the Jazz Workshop: ;He chased everybody off the stand except [drummer] Paul Motian and me… The three of us just wailed on the blues for about an hour and a half before he called the other cats back
On October 12, 1962, Mingus punched Jimmy Knepper in the mouth while the two men were working together at Mingus’s apartment on a score for his upcoming concert at New York Town Hall and Knepper refused to take on more work. The blow from Mingus broke off a crowned tooth and its underlying stub,According to Knepper, this ruined his embouchure and resulted in the permanent loss of the top octave of his range on the trombone – a significant handicap for any professional trombonist. This attack temporarily ended their working relationship and Knepper was unable to perform at the concert. Charged with assault, Mingus appeared in court in January, 1963 and was given a suspended sentence. Knepper would again work with Mingus in 1977 and played extensively with the Mingus Dynasty, formed after Mingus’ death in 1979.
Mingus was evicted from his apartment at 5 Great Jones Street in New York City for nonpayment of rent, captured in the film ;Mingus: 1968 by Thomas Reichman, which also features Mingus performing in clubs and, in the apartment, shooting a shotgun, composing at the piano, and discussing love, art, and politics and the music school he had hoped to create,By the mid-1970s, Mingus was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a wastage of the musculature. His once formidable bass technique suffered, until he could no longer play the instrument. He continued composing, however, and supervised a number of recordings before his death.

Comparison – Contrast of Anxiety Depression classical Diagnosis (Assessment), Etiology (Causes), Pathology (Disease Process – Progress) and Treatment (Therapies) in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (T.C.M. or Traditional Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture) and Ayurveda — both styles Indo-Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu Ayurveda with along with Tibetan Medicine (Traditional Ayurvedic Medicine – T.A.M.).

Continuing Education Course Title is:

"One-Earth Therapeutics – Kaya Chikitsa – Integrated Ayurvedic-Chinese-Western Remedies for Anxiety (Atattvabhinivesha), Panic, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive (OCD) and Depression according to 200 B.C. Charaka Samhita – Level I"

Course Codes are: HRB338, HRB538, HRB638, HRB738

These Hi-Def HDTV videos and the MP3 audio files are the first in a 1.5 trimester unit (22.5 class hours long) series of lectures aimed and comparing, contrasting and synthesizing Anxiety Diagnosis and Anxiety Treatment in both the 2500 year old Chinese Medicine (Zhong Yi or TCM) with the 2500 year old Indian Ayurveda and 1300 year old Tibetan Ayurveda systems (TAM). The goal of this lecture program is to assist the student in seeing and understanding their vast commonalities in both theory (concepts) and practice (clinic) of ancient Indo-Sino-Tibetan psychological – psychiatric therapies in order to learn integrated practice modalities.

This rarely presented synthesis of the healing wisdom of these three great cultures (China, India and Tibet) will not only compare-contrast the theoretical and practical aspects of psychology – psychiatry within the framework of these two time-honored healing systems, but more importantly, will examine in detail the clinical practice aspects of manic – depressive bi-polar treatment — both herbal connections (Indian, Tibetan and Chinese herbs and minerals) and acupressure (Marmas in Ayurvedic Sanskrit) with acupuncture in the Chinese system.

We examine the mind and mental illness from the perspective of the Ayurvedic three doshas (Tridosha – Vata-Pitta-Kapha) and look at their relationship to major concepts in Chinese Medicine that are often spoken of by acupuncturists to their patients. Some of these relationship comparisons include:

1. Vata Dosha (Space and Air – Wind, Cold, Qi [Prana in Ayurvedic Sanskrit]),

2. Pitta Dosha (Fire and Water – Spleen Qi [Jathar Agni in Sanskrit], Heat, Damp-Heat, Blood [Rakta Dhatu in Sanskrit], and Yang),

3. Kapha Dosha (Water and Earth – Phlegm-Mucous [Ama in Sanskrit], Damp-Cold, Jing Qi [Ojas in Sanskrit] and Yin).

Commentary on and Lectures from the ancients texts of Indo-Sino-Tibetan Medicine: Chinese Classic of the Yellow Emperor – Huang Di Nei Jing (~200 B.C.), Shang Han Lun (~150 A.D. traditional Chinese Shang Hán Lùn), Divine Farmers Materia Medica (~150 A.D. The Divine Farmer’s Herb-Root Classic (traditional Chinese Shénnóng bencao jing) with Charaka of Patanjali (~200 B.C.), Sushruta of Nagarjuna (~200 A.D.), Astanga Hridayam of Vagbhata (~700 A.D.) and the "Four Tibetan Medical Tantras" (~800 A.D. "rGyud – bzhi" in Tibetan, pronounced "Ju Shee" — "Si-Bu-Yi-Dian in Mandarin — in Sanskrit it is called the "Amrta-hrdaya-astanga-guhyopadesa-tantra" or Amrita Hridaya Astanga Guhyopadesha Tantra)

If not, you will miss out on the foundation explanations of vata, pitta and kapha.

This class is a basic level yet detailed introduction to diseases of the mind and spirit (Ayurvedic Psychology) focusing on diagnosis of Prakruti (genetic constitution of vata-pitta-kapha) and Vikruti (imbalance of three doshas of vata-space-air-movement, pitta-fire-water-metabolism, kapha-water-earth-phlegm-fat).

Indo – Tibetan medicine — enshrined in the classic medical text called Rgyud bzi which was originally composed in Sanskrit and still available in Tibetan — is a veritable treasure of centuries of accumulated experience with rational fundamentals and scientifically analyzable therapeutic measures meant for the preservation and promotion of positive health, and prevention and cure of obstinate and otherwise incurable diseases.

Five Tips of Coping With Mental Depression in Your Life

August 29th, 2010
Mental Depression
by Feggy Art (formerly Victius)

Five Tips of Coping With Mental Depression in Your Life

Why, exactly, do you get mental depression and experience sorrows in your life? These two things are so common in our society today that they have lost their serious meaning. There are so many things around you and as you get engaged in them, you find yourself in problems. Yes, problems come to be part of your life.

Problems breed sadness and if you are not able to control them, then you end up being very unhappy without hopes for the future. Depression is a state of mental illness where one is very unhappy and anxious. It can impair a life. Coping with mental depression can be done without the help of a professional therapist or prescription of drugs.

Here are Five Tips of Managing Mental Depression

1. Stay Active.

A good exercise workout releases endorphins. Endorphins are natural mood boosters that can help brighten your mood. Staying active also keeps you busy in that your mind is occupied and you have less time to dwell on your sorrows. When you are depressed and inactive, energies build up inside of you that keep on fueling your mental depressions. When you are active you burn those energies off.

2. Proper Rest is Essential

You need proper rest and relaxation to be able to cope with mental depression. Relaxation techniques can be learned and implemented to help you maintain a period of peace and calm. Make your bedroom a sanctuary where you can sleep and rest without any added stressful interruptions.

3. Keep Away from Suppressing Emotions.

Don’t keep your feeling bottled up inside. Grief and sorrow can lead to mental depression if the emotions are not expressed. Many people associate crying with weakness and therefore don’t release feelings of sadness. Crying is a form of releasing mental depression and is therapeutic.

However, some forms of release like smashing things and boxing might not be the best choices especially if the emotion is bottled up with anger. Those practices teach you to practice violence as a form of emotional expression and can lead to dangerous behaviors.

4. Don’t Isolate Yourself.

Don’t isolate yourself even though you may want to. Stay in close contact with your family members and friends. Depressed people need support and often can’t see things clearly. Loved ones can remind you that life is worth living and things will eventually get better for you. When you’re with others, you get engaged with them and your depressed thoughts disappear.

5. Believe in Yourself.

Low self esteem can lead to mental depression. Don’t put yourself down but put yourself first and build a sense of self worth. Do things that make you happy. Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself the same way you would treat a dear loved one. You should learning to love yourself as this is an important step towards overcoming mental depression.

It is possible to manage mental depression. Sadness fades over time and little by little you can build a normal life.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Have you ever thought of sending them poems that will make them smile and cherish you? Why not click this link and share your poems for friends.

How To Naturally Help Depression and Increase Serotonin Levels. Part 1 of 2

August 28th, 2010

blog.healthy.co.nz As far as lifestyle and dietary changes to help if you are depressed, there are many. Getting out in the sunlight for 20 minutes a day is an easy way to help boost serotonin levels. This may also help reduce stress levels, another important factor involved in helping with serotonin. If you are going to take recreational drugs like E or P, make sure you supplement properly before and afterwards, to help to compensate for the side effects of these drugs. It is well known that people who take these kind of drugs have low levels of all kinds of nutrients in their body, as well as the amino acids used to make neurotransmitters or brain chemicals, needed to regulate mood. For more information on the types of nutrients and amino acids needed to take when using these drugs, click here for our information on Pre loading. Food allergies and intolerances could contribute to feelings of depression. However these are not easy to identify. Those who suffer with a candida over growth can experience depression and other personality problems. Candida albicans is a yeast that lives naturally occurring in the body. Many women have an overgrowth of this yeast in their body, with the common symptom of this being vaginal thrush. However this is just 1 of the many symptoms you can experience with a candida over growth. You do not need to have thrush to have an over growth. If you wanted to know conclusively whether you have this over growth or not, you can complete this

Donate money to charity in memory of Jeremy Brett : www.justgiving.com Jeremy so wanted to give hope and help to others with manic depression (bipolar), he bravely made this broadcast even though he was in terrible ill health. He thought it important for others to seek help with their bipolar ( JB had type 1, which he describes mostly in this video). Sadly it turned out to be the last speech he ever made (he passed on just a few weeks later). Jeremy inspired me to seek help, and has helped me to come to terms with my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. I do hope this video will be a help to others too. This recording is from the BBC, and it is here purely as a helpful resource to others without profit, no copyright infringement intended. Manic Depression Fellowship 8-10 High St, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey KT1 1EY United Kingdom Phone: 0208974 6550 www.mdf.org.uk Jeremy Brett was desperately ill suffering from a failing heart when this speech was aired in early September of 1995. His voice sounds quite tired compared to former times. Though still lovely as ever to me. Just want to say if anyone wants to add video? responses to do with bipolar disorder, they may do so on this video and my other ( dancing in the moonlight). Big thank you to Linda Pritchard and RJDoll2 for sharing this with me.

HRB338 is an In-Depth Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine Study (Diagnosis and Treatment) of Anxiety Disorder and Mental Illnesses (Unmad in Ayurvedic Sanskrit), along with examination of related Vata Anxiety Disorders, Pitta Anger Violence Mania, Suicidal Tendencies (Suicide), Kapha Sadness Depression and Melancholy.

Chronic Depression

This road, leads St Patrick’s Mental Hospital.

St Patrick’s Hospital is a psychiatric facility located in Dublin 8, Ireland , near Kilmainham and the Phoenix Park. Founded with money bequeathed by Jonathan Swift. In his poem "Lines on the Death of Dr Swift", Swift famously wrote:
"He gave the little wealth he had /To build a house for fools and mad, /And showed by one satiric touch /No nation needed it so much."
The hospital retains Swiftian touches, with wards named after Stella ( Esther Johnson ), Vanessa ( Esther Vanhomrigh ), Henry Grattan, the village of Kilroot where Swift worked as Prebend at the church, and Laracor when he also worked as a clergyman.
It is a now a private not-for-profit hospital. It has departments of occupational therapy, social work and clinical psychology as well as psychiatry. It offers day hospital and outpatient services as well as inpatient ones. Its motto is "Festina Lente." Prominent psychiatrists such as Anthony Clare are associated with it. Maurice Drury, a friend of Ludwig Wittgenstein, was also associated with the hospital. The poet Austin Clarke was an inpatient there for a year in 1919.
The hospital provides a wide and growing range of treatment programmes for particular disorders and attracting patients from throughout Ireland and from abroad. These specialised treatment programmes include programmes for mood disorders (depression and bipolar depression), anxiety disorder, an alcohol dependence / substance abuse programme, the largest inpatient unit in Ireland for the treatment of the eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, a young adult programme, a treatment programme for those who suffer severe forms of chronic fatigue syndrome as well as a memory clinic and general psychiatric care.

Cat Naps Can Be Good for You
Chronic Depression

Positive thinking is good for the body: people who believe in positive myths about themselves live longer, have fewer heart attacks, and require less anesthesia during surgery. Optimists’ wounds heal more quickly than those of pessimists.

Being a pessimist can shorten your lifespan. Being depressed in even worse. New research is showing us more and more evidence that depression damages health. A whole new science, psychoneuroimmunology, has developed over the past twenty-five eyars to explore the sometimes mystifying connections between mind, body, and health – for instance, the finding that stressful experiences in childhood cause changes in the brain that seem to make you more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases in adulthood like lupus, to chronic pain conditions, to not-yet-understood illnesses like fibromyalgia, and to heart disease, diabetes, stroke and fractures.

. . . Many have reached the conclusion that it’s best to eliminate the distinction bettween mind and body. Much of the mind is in the body, in complex nerve cetners in the heart, gut and immune systems that function like auxiliary brains, in receptor systems in the muscles, bones, blood and lymph that are tied intimately into the traditional brains in our heads.

What do you think causes depression and anxiety? What healed you?

August 13th, 2010

Question by graceful: What do you think causes depression and anxiety? What healed you?
Interested in different opinions about what causes depression and anxiety?
Please share your stories of what helped and/or healed depression and/or anxiety.

Answer by Paige
Drugs aren’t always the necessary step to take. I was put on antidepressants, and I did see some results, however, they weren’t what i expected or what I wanted. My advice would be to find something or someone you love and enjoy being with. Find someone you can trust and who you feel safe talking to, my best friend saved my life, without her i would have let the depression win and would have killed myself. Now I don’t fight the depression, when i’m with her, everything is better. Depression is one of two things, a chemical imbalance within your head, or its just a low point in your life. Turns out mine was both.
